Do you have lots of career change ideas whirring around your head but you don’t know how to get clear on which to choose. Here are some of my suggestions to help you move forward with this.
Step 1 – Get clear on the end result:
Before you start making a choice get clear on what you want the end result to be. Think about what you want to doing, how you want to work, where you want to want, who you want to work with and why you want to work this way. Then when you are clear on the vision for how you want your career (or business) to look like for your future, start to see which ideas you have that fit closely with this vision. The one that ticks the most boxes could be the one to start pursuing first.
Step 2 – How to make the decision on the next step:
If you are still struggling with making a decision on what to do here are my top three tips on how to change this:
Break it down into manageable steps.
If you have made a decision but are feeling overwhelmed about how to make the change then take time to think about where you are now and where you want to be. Then break down the steps you can take to get there. Make them small manageable steps that can be taken one (or a few) at a time but each takes you in the right direction and that way there is movement to your desired goal.
Start with one idea.
Which one interests you the most and then do some research on possibilities of roles you could pursue, industries best for these roles and what is required to be able to work in these roles. Speak to contacts you have already working in these roles to get their input on how you can break into this area.
Is fear holding you back?
Often our decisions can be frozen by fear; of the unknown, going out of our comfort zone, failure etc (see my previous blog for more details). Check in with the fear to understand where it is coming from then think about times when this fear has arisen in the past and you have overcome it to successfully make a change. Tap into that success as a reminder that it’s okay to feel the fear but equally good to make that change.
