Do you want to change your career but don’t know where to start in deciding what to do next? Are you staring at a blank piece of paper feeling confused? Or is your head spinning with ideas but nothing is making sense? Do you want get focussed and find ideas for you to pursue?
We often know that we want something to change but when it comes to making that change we are confused or unsure about what we should actually do to improve the situation. This can happen when we want to change careers; we know the current one isn’t right but with so many options as to what we could do next what often stops us is the clarity about what we could do instead. There is also often fear about having to start over again, that what we have already learnt is going to go to waste and none of our skills can be used outside of our current career. However, once we have that clarity and can look at the options this can help to alleviate these fears.
The 7 Questions:
So, before you let these fears and confusion hold you back give yourself a break and consider my top 7 questions to help you overcome the confusion and start finding inspiration:
- What motivates you?
- What are your strengths?
- What inspires you? Make a list of everything that inspires you – including books, websites, people, quotes etc
- When you feel really satisfied at work what are you doing?
- If you changed jobs what would you miss most about your current job?
- What’s missing in your current job?
- What career/job/company have you enjoyed the most? What did you enjoy specifically and why?
Once you have an answer to each question review them together looking for themes of skills, roles and inspirational ideas you can pursue and consider.
